From Rebecca Adlington and Hannah Miley to Robbie Renwick and Michael Jamieson, we all love to watch Great Britain’s top performing swimmers and cheer them on as they cut a path through the water in an adrenaline-fuelled race. However, in all our adulation for the competitors and excitement at the spectacle of each race, we overlook the single most important aspect of every swimming competition – the pool.

If you’ve watched Bradley Wiggins slog it out on the Tour De France, you’ll have an appreciation for the powerful influence of competition. No-one takes on a challenge like that without serious training, and turning up to compete without getting yourself fit to face other challengers isn’t worth the trip to the starting line.
