How you are charged for water, wastewater and trade effluent

All our charges have been agreed with our regulator, the Water Industry Commission for Scotland (WICS), to ensure you pay a fair price for the water and waste water services you receive.

There are three basic charges, which apply to your individual sites:

Water

You’ll pay water charges if your property is connected to the public water supply. There’s a fixed element and a charge based on how much you use (if you have a meter) or your property’s rateable value (if you don’t have a meter).

Waste water

This is payable if your property is connected, or drains to, the public sewer.

These charges cover rainwater and waste water drainage from your property, or where an overflow from a septic tank is connected to a public sewer or drain.

Again there are a fixed and metered (or rateable value if you don’t have a meter) elements. There are also separate itemised charges for property and roads drainage so you can see exactly what you’re paying for (based on rateable value).

Trade effluent

You’ll only pay these charges if you have an agreement directly with Scottish Water (the wholesaler) to discharge your trade effluent into the public waste water network.

Default tariffs

The Water Industry Commission for Scotland has issued default maximum tariffs that all licensed providers must offer to customers for providing default services. You can see what these tariffs are from 1 April 2008, as well as the default services and the associated service standards, at the Commission’s website.
