Saving water and protecting the environment

It is true that saving water can save you money. But it is more than that. It’s about business efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Scotland is lucky. Water is one of our key natural assets, and we currently enjoy a surplus of supply over demand. But climate change and growth in consumption mean we can't take this happy balance for granted.

Tap water is a precious commodity. Yet much of this expensively purified resource is wasted. The more water we can save, the less the impact on the environment.

Would you have guessed, for example, that the wholesaler is the country's largest electricity user? This means that when we save water, we also reduce our carbon footprint.

So how can we all do our bit?

Working together

On the simple basis premise that "what goes in, must come out", aim to account for the water you use. A meter will help you do this. And a smart meter takes that a step further by allowing you to monitor use and spot opportunities to be more water efficient.

Walk around your business. Look for obvious things like leaking pipes and dripping taps, but also ask yourself for every process:

  • Is water necessary here?
  • Could we use less?
  • Could it be re-used or recycled?

If you don’t have time to do it yourself, we can help you spot opportunities to be more water efficient by carrying out a water audit on your site(s).

We are also very aware of how Business Stream, as a company, affects the environment. For more information on how we address and monitor our own impact, please see the corporate social responsibility section of our website.
