Across Scotland millions of litres of waste water are collected and treated everyday. You'll see a charge for your share of this on your bill.
First it is the water collected from any of your drains that are connected to the mains public waste water network. It is then discharged into streams, rivers, estuaries and coastal waters.
How is waste water treated?
Your waste water passes down drains into the sewer network. Here, a vast network of pipes and pumps transport it on to waste water treatment works.
Across Scotland, there over 1,800 waste water treatment works. They ensure the waste water doesn't harm the environment, before returning the treated water to rivers and the sea.
A typical treatment process includes:
- Preliminary treatment (removing any grit)
- Primary treatment (sedimentation)
- Secondary treatment (filtering)
- Final treatment (final settlement)
