Companies can make huge efficiency savings through water health checks

January 2009

Business Stream, Scotland’s main non-domestic water supplier has launched a new service that helps companies make water work for them by saving money and protecting the environment.

The firm believes that its health check service, which includes the use of benchmarking, audits and smart meters, will help customers identify leaks and unnecessary water consumption with the potential to generate savings of up to six figures per year for some businesses.

Business Stream’s new service offering is designed to further develop the use of smart meters. Offered initially on a trial basis, the service is aimed at helping companies see the positive financial impact that smart metering can have on its operations by indicating the what, when and why associated with their water consumption.

The health check service will be specifically tailored for each company.  Business Stream can compare a customer’s usage against a recognised industry benchmark, or fit smart meters at a site for a trial period that will give rapid, accurate assessment of water use, including any irregular consumption patterns. They can also set up a structure for multi-site customers so they can compare usage between operations in different locales.

Business Stream has worked with a number of customers including transport firm First Group, who accumulated annual savings of more than £100,000 through the installation of smart meters in a number of sites across Scotland.

Gordon Inglis, head of business solutions at Business Stream said, “The health check underlines our credentials in delivering better efficiency and sustainability for customers. We have already worked closely with a number of customers to demonstrate the value of smart metering to their business. In many cases, we have helped deliver significant savings by identifying urgent problems such as major leakage.

‘The health check also offers reassurance to companies that they are running an efficient and environmentally sound operation which is vital in today’s business environment.’
