If you’re paying an unmetered flat rate for your water, you’ll find it hard to reap the benefits of thinking green. With a water meter, every time you save water, you save money. Simple.
How can you get a water meter installed? Does it cost much?
Scottish Water and the Government are keen for us all to be conscientious water-users. So they set up something called the full business metering project, which has installed water meters – free of charge – in every business in which installation is physically possible and financially viable.
For businesses in this project water metering charges have been phased starting from April 2009. You can find out more on our dedicated full business metering site.
If you’ve not had a meter installed as part of the full business metering project and you’d like one you can ask us to arrange a survey of your pipework or you can get your property reassessed. Without a meter you are charged on an assessed rate which is based on your property’s rateable value. For more information on getting reassessed read our handy guide.

Taking care of your meter
Once you’ve got your water meter, it’s up to you to protect it from the elements and make sure it doesn’t get damaged. It’s a pretty sturdy piece of equipment, but we all know how Scottish weather can be. There are specific terms and conditions associated with using your meter, you can find them in our standard terms and conditions. [175KB | PDF]
Even when well-protected, water meters sometimes stop working properly. If that happens, let us know as soon as possible. We’ll arrange for a maintenance expert to pop round and get it up and running again. If you think there's a problem with your water meter, drop us a line at customer.service@business-stream.co.uk
Remember: for a more accurate bill, you can submit your meter reading online
