Maintaining your meter

It’s your responsibility to look after your water meter. Here’s how to find it, check it and keep it in tip-top condition.

Finding your water meter

The location of your water meter is usually shown on your bill - on the second page, bottom left. Most water meters are outside the building, but within the boundary of the property. Some are installed indoors. We can help you track yours down, if you don't know where it is.

Preventing problems

Make sure your business doesn’t suffer due to extreme weather affecting your meter. Follow these helpful steps.

Heat

  • leave your heating on at a low temperature
  • make sure heaters are well-maintained and working properly.

Insulate

  • check loft insulation is thick and in good condition
  • invest in insulation for your water pipes.

Protect

  • have any leaks in taps or valves repaired
  • fit draught excluders to your doors and windows
  • use proper insulation to keep your water meter from freezing.

Meter repairs

Even when they’re well protected, water meters sometimes stop working properly. If you think there’s a problem with your water meter, please get in touch.

We’ll arrange for a maintenance expert to take a look. There may be a charge, but we’ll let you know at the time.

Testing for accuracy

If you’ve checked your meter regularly and you’re concerned it’s not giving the right reading, let us know. We’ll send someone to test it.

The charge for the test depends on the size of your water meter. Find out more about our charges here. We’ll refund that if it turns out that your meter is out by more than 5%. We’ll also check your old bills to make sure you haven’t been overcharged.
