Will my bill from Business Stream be higher or lower than Southern Water?

The water and waste water charges you see on your bill are made up of two components.  The largest portion of your bill is the wholesale cost, which accounts for about 94% of the total (depending on your annual consumption), and covers the cost of providing the water and waste water infrastructure such as reservoirs, pipes and sewerage treatment plants, as well as the water itself. If you don’t know who your wholesaler is check out your Business Stream bill, it’s printed in the top right corner. Depending on who supplies your water and waste water services, you might have a different wholesaler for each service. The second component of your bill is the retail element and accounts for the remaining 6% of the bill.  It covers the cost of reading your meter, printing and providing your bills and payment collection.

Both the wholesale charge and the retail charge are regulated, which means that the industry regulator Ofwat sets the maximum average prices that service providers are allowed to charge customers each year.  By and large, wholesale charges are allowed to increase from April each year to reflect inflation and other changes in the cost base of the wholesaler.  Retailers, like us, are allowed to pass on the wholesale price changes to customers and may also be allowed by the regulator to pass on some of their own changes in costs.  This usually results in an annual price adjustment from 1 April.

So, any price difference that you can see on your bill between 2016/17 and 2017/18 is due to the annual regulated price adjustment. This means that you are not paying any more than you would have had you not transferred to Business Stream.

If you’re concerned about your bill please don’t hesitate to contact our team on 0330 123 2000. We’re happy to help.
