Getting a water meter installed gives you greater control over your water bills – and can be a big step towards saving money
Keep track of your consumption
In this section you’ll be able to find out how to read your meter, what you can do if you don’t have a meter or want your meter resized.
If you already have a meter your bills will be based on either an estimated reading or an actual meter read. It’s important to make sure you’re submitting frequent meter readings (if it’s safe to do so) so that you are only paying for the water consumption you use and not estimated charges.
If your water usage has changed a lot since you had your meter installed, it’s worth checking to see if you have the correct meter size installed. You can use our online tool to find out, if your site is based in Scotland.
If you're in Scotland and don’t have a meter, your charges will be based on the Rateable Value of your property. You can use our reassessment calculator to see if you’d be better off with a meter or read more about unmetered water supplies here.

Can I read my meter?
Yes, we would encourage you to keep a record of your meter reads where possible. Don't forget, only take a meter reading if it is safe to do so. Some meters are located in awkward places. If this is the case, then let one of our meter readers do it for you.
Where can I find my meter?
Your water meter may not always be easy to locate; over time structural changes to properties and external roadworks can mean that access might not always be clear or safe. Our trained field team will schedule to read your meter periodically, but we understand that some customers like to monitor their own usage.
It’s best to initially contact a plumber if you cannot locate the meter. We've teamed up with SNIPEF to give you online access to a database of licensed plumbers in Scotland. If your site is in England, we recommend contacting a licensed plumber who'll be able to help you.
Please remember to only read your meter if it's safe to do so.
How many meter reads can I provide?
You can provide meter reads as often as you like. The more water meter readings we have, the more accurate your bills will be. Take regular readings and submit them online to build up a clearer picture of what you use.
Does Business Stream read my meter and when?
Business Stream will read your meter twice every year. Quarterly billed accounts will have two actual reads and two estimated reads. We encourage every customer to read their own meter if possible, to ensure that your bills are always accurate. Your meter reading schedule will be dependent on when your account is billed.
