We offer a range of customer services to your business but to understand how we supply you with water in the first place you need to see how water is collected and delivered to direct to your pipes.
Step 1 – Reservoir & Rivers
Rainfall and river water is collected and stored – there are 678 reservoirs in Scotland. Since most of the reservoirs are in Scotland’s mountains, water often has to travel a long way.
Step 2: Draw-Off Tower
Water flows through pipes and is pumped to the treatment works. The wholesaler, Scottish Water is Scotland’s biggest electricity user because of the amount of pumping they do.
Step 3: Treatment Works
The water is pumped to the treatment works where it is filtered and cleaned so that you can drink it. The water quality standards are very high in Scotland which means this process is costly to complete.
Step 4: Storage Tanks
After treatment the water goes to storage tanks – but not for long. High demand means water is constantly is on the move and clean water is rarely stored for longer than 12 hours.
2.5 billion litres of water is supplied a day, that’s enough to fill 1,000 Olympic – sized swimming pools.
Step 5: Your Business
Fresh pure water is piped to your business so that it’s there every time you turn on a tap!
Did you know that every person in Scotland uses around 143 litres of water every day – equivalent to 444 cola cans of water? In a year that adds up to 54,000 litres or an incredible 162,000 cola cans!
