Save money and the environment with our handy tips to reduce your water usage.
General upkeep
Saving water for free
- If you have business vehicles, clean them with a bucket and sponge, or use a hose with a shut off valve so it isn’t constantly running.
- If you are washing sheets, table cloths, towels, etc, try to only put on a full load. It wastes both water and energy doing a half load.
- Fixing leaking taps can save a bath full of water a day.
Investments for longer term savings
- Why not install a water system to reuse waste laundry water for gardening or irrigation?
- Ensure that any new equipment sourced is water efficient.
- Use pipe insulation so that during a cold spell your pipes don’t burst.
In your commercial kitchen
Saving water for free
- Wait until you have a full dishwasher before running a load.
- When washing kitchen utensils, use a basin rather than running water.
Investments for longer term savings
- It takes about 40 litres of water to fill the average hospitality sink, yet a dishwater that’s water efficient could use less than 15 litres.
- Install automatic tap controls.
In your bathrooms
Saving water for free
- Fit a free water-saving hippo in the cistern of your toilet. This can save up to three litres per flush.
- Make sure taps are always turned off.
Investments for longer term savings
- Install dual flush toilets.
- Special urinal water controls can reduce water usage.
- Use automatic taps to stop them being accidentally left on.
- Why not consider a water system to reuse water from the morning shower in the cistern of your toilet?
Outside your premises
Saving water for free
- Use a broom and a bucket of water to wash down the patio, rather than a hose.
- Install a water butt to collect rain water – this is perfect for watering your green areas.
