A MAJOR project to restore degraded and deforested land in Mexico has been backed by one of the UK’s leading water retailers as it renews it partnership with climate action specialists, Ecologi.
The initiative has been backed by Business Stream as they collaborate with the verified climate action provider for a third year, continuing to offset their carbon footprint through investment in global environmental initiatives.
The Edinburgh-based water retailer is contributing to the “Reforesting the Land of the Jaguar” project which will see 1 million tonnes of CO2 removed every 20-year cycle by reforesting over 1 million trees of native Harwood, restoring vital land near the Laguna de Terminos nature reserve in southeast Mexico.
Using a regenerative forestry approach, the restoration efforts will enable the rapid restoration of the local ecosystem providing a favourable environment for the endangered Mexican Jaguar, which has faced severe extinction risks for decades due to deforestation and poaching.
Through its investment, which equates to its 2025-26 Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, Business Stream has provided crucial support to revive the land in the local area which has faced severe ecological erosion, whilst continuing its commitment to funding high-quality climate projects as it progresses towards its goal of becoming net zero by 2030.

In addition to environmental benefits, the project is improving the livelihoods of the local community, providing 50 residents with permanent jobs and producing 1,000 tonnes of haematoxylin per year, a natural dye with many different uses, providing a valuable resource for local industries to use in manufacturing and trade, helping to support the regional economy.
The area could also become a sanctuary for several animals at risk of extinction, with scientists estimating it could provide habitat for more than 300 bird species, 19 amphibian species and 88 mammal species, including the spider monkey and great curassow.
