Water management for greener businesses
28 October 2025 Reading time: 3 minutes
When businesses focus on going green, water often gets left out of the conversation. Energy, transport and waste grab all the attention, especially in the UK, where there never seems to be a shortage of rain. But water is a finite resource, and pressure on supplies is growing.
Experts warn that within 20 years, parts of the UK could face serious water shortages*. For businesses, that’s more than an environmental concern, it’s a direct risk to operations and costs.
Some businesses have already tackled leaks and installed efficient devices to allow real-time water monitoring. Now, the next step is smarter and sustainable water management, using technology and tailored support to gain real insights and take control of your water consumption.
Turn data into action
Last year, we launched our Power BI Intelligent Water Management (IWM) tool, to give businesses clear, site-specific insights into their water use.
With IWM reporting, you can benefit from cost saving opportunities by:
- instantly spotting unusual water consumption spikes through automated alerts,
- understanding if your meter is the right size for your site through meter optimisation reporting, and
- comparing your average daily water consumption for one site against another, to identify any unexpected levels of water usage.
This data-driven approach moves beyond guesswork, helping your business to identify hidden inefficiencies and act fast, to save water and cut costs.
Water Stewardship as part of your business culture
For businesses putting water efficiency at the heart of their strategy, our UK-first Water Stewardship Programme offers a hands-on, practical approach. Developed with sustainability experts 20FIFTY Partners, this 12-week course combines group learning, one-to-one mentoring and actionable planning.
Participants gain practical knowledge and tools to drive water-saving initiatives across their organisation, boost employee engagement and make meaningful progress toward sustainability targets. And as a bonus, the programme comes with an accreditation to recognise your business’s commitment.
Businesses that took part in our pilot programme have seen impressive results, including improved water efficiency, stronger team engagement and evidence of clear progress towards sustainability goals. These successes show that water efficiency is more than just a tick box exercise, it can deliver positive business benefits.
Why it matters now, more than ever
With drought risks increasing across the UK, and an unseasonably warm and dry spring placing further pressure on available water supplies, managing water use responsibly is no longer a nice to have. Every drop saved helps protect our environment and secures water supplies for communities and future generations.
If you’re ready to move beyond the basics, our insights, tools and programmes are here to support your business on the path to smarter water management and a greener future.

*Public Accounts Committee report published on July 9, 2020. The National Audit Office (NAO) has projected that by 2050, the UK could face a daily water shortfall of up to 5 billion litres due to factors such as climate change, population growth and aging infrastructure. The Environment Agency has warned that without significant improvements in water management, many areas in England could experience significant supply deficits by 2050.
